Verizon 5g Home

This is interesting.. I suppose it could be a game changer if they can really get this many home users on a wireless network and maintain the speeds.

http://www.cnet.com/news/verizons-5...-starts-at-50/

Home internet service 300mb - 1gb speeds.. Free installation.. Free first 3 months.. $50 a month after for VZW customers or $70 for others. Good price for those speeds IF they can maintain it.

I'll definitely be looking into this if available for me. I am paying $60 for spectrum 100m now. $50 for 300m with free apple tv 4k sounds great.

I'd also be down for this. But what will they do when somebody offers 6G home broadband?

Do what AT&T did and do a "software" update to change the display to "give" it the next generation cellular abilities.

Also my address isn't eligible. Ugh.

5G probably won't be available for a lot of people for at least two years, until the infrastructure gets built up.

Not available at my address either. I'm too far away from Los Angeles I guess although I checked the addresses for 5 of my friends who live a lot closer and none of them have it available either. I think it will be a good while for me since, inside our home, we don't even get 3g signals.. it's usually 1x from the cell towers. Thank goodness for WIFI calling so I don't have depend on the cell towers.

Re: Verizon 5g Home

The big Elephant in the room, of course, is what is the monthly data cap? Conveniently, it is not mentioned in the article. Verizon will probably start to throttle at some ridiculously small amount of data per month, like 200 GB or 300 GB. The only way this will even remain remotely viable for them (rapacious profiteers that they are) is to impose some draconian data cap. On the other hand $50 per month for a reasonable cap, like 1 TB per month might be more enticing. Or, as our "friends" at Spectrum currently offer, no monthly data cap, and I'd do this in a minute.

I already looked into that. There is no data cap.

Here's another article where Verizon talks about it..

http://fortune.com/2018/09/11/verizo...service-oct-1/

Quote:
“Verizon 5G Home customers should expect typical network speeds around 300 Mbps and, depending on location, peak speeds of nearly 1 Gig, with no data caps,” Verizon said in a statement. “Verizon 5G Home is ideal for consumers looking to ‘cut the cord’ or upgrade from their current cable service.”
So... the only thing I really have to say is.. ok maybe TODAY there's no caps but with my cell phone I've had unlimited data before.. and then they took it away.. and then they brought it back for more money.. certainly not a company I have confidence in to maintain a reasonable pricing structure for long. However might get a couple of great years before they crank up the rates. Plus this may drive the "wired" service providers to become more competitive.

Thanks for the info. Yes, you can COUNT on the fact that there will be a cap within 6 months of introduction. I think the "no data caps" 'promise' will last just long enough to get customers hooked on the service, then, Verizon will surreptitiously start to throttle and / or introduce caps. Also, they'll double and probably triple the cost of the service. It has happened before, it will happen again. The "no data caps" is a thinly guised come-on, a dangling carrot which will entice a lot of customers into the service, and Verizon knows this, and has planned for a phase-in of caps.

So, in other words, if you're lucky enough to live in an area where this is offered, strike NOW while the iron's hot, enjoy the service, and get ready for the inevitable letdown in 6 months to a year.

So what's the latency on this like? I like my games hardwired to reduce latency as much as possible.
